The Sport of Precision & Mental Mastery

Rifle Shooting is one of the world’s oldest and most respected Olympic sports — a discipline that challenges the athlete not with physical strength, but with extraordinary mental composure, breath control, and technical precision. A sport where the margin between gold and silver is measured in fractions of a millimetre.

Unlike many sports, Rifle Shooting is truly egalitarian — athletes of all ages, body types, and physical abilities compete on equal terms. What matters is the mind, the stillness within, and the trained discipline to execute perfectly under pressure. India has a proud tradition of Olympic shooting medals, making this one of the country’s most celebrated competitive sports.

At its core, Rifle Shooting teaches practitioners to control their body, quiet their thoughts, and master the moment — skills that transfer directly to academic performance, professional excellence, and daily life.

6 Types of Rifle Shooting

From air rifle at 10 metres to outdoor precision at 50 metres, the shooting sports offer a range of disciplines — each demanding a unique combination of technique, mental control, and physical composure.

🎯

10m Air Rifle

Olympic · Beginner Friendly

The most popular shooting discipline worldwide — fired from 10 metres with a compressed air rifle. The entry point for most shooters and the primary Olympic event. Demands extreme stillness, breath control and mental focus.

  • Olympic Games discipline
  • Indoor 10m range
  • 60 shots per competition
  • Best starting point for all ages
🏆

50m Rifle 3 Positions

Olympic · Advanced

The supreme test of rifle shooting — competing at 50 metres in three distinct positions: prone (lying), standing, and kneeling. Each position demands different muscle groups, balance, and technique adaptations.

  • Olympic 3-position event
  • Outdoor 50m range
  • 45 shots per position
  • Advanced technique required
🎖️

50m Rifle Prone

Precision · Olympic

Fired from the prone (lying) position at 50 metres — the most stable rifle position and the one where the highest scores are achievable. Demands exceptional trigger control, sight picture and breathing technique.

  • Most precise rifle discipline
  • 60 shots in competition
  • Highest possible scores
  • Requires exacting trigger work
🤸

Standing (Free Rifle)

Balance · Strength

Shooting from the standing position — the most challenging body position in rifle shooting. Without any support, the shooter must control sway, balance, breathing and trigger release simultaneously. The ultimate test of composure.

  • Most challenging position
  • Builds core strength & balance
  • Advanced mental discipline
  • Olympic & national events
👶

Junior Air Rifle

Youth · Under 21

  • Open to all women & girls
  • Safe, structured training

Core Techniques

From the fundamentals of stance and hold to the mastery of breath control and trigger release — here are the essential skills taught at Temple of Academy’s Rifle Shooting programme.

Prone Position
Lying — Most Stable
The foundation of rifle shooting — lying face-down with the rifle supported by both arms, sling, and the ground. The most stable position, producing the highest scores. Requires proper body alignment and elbow placement.
Standing Position
Standing — Most Challenging
Firing from an upright position with no external support. Demands extraordinary core stability, weight distribution, and ability to control natural body sway. The most difficult and respected rifle shooting position.
Kneeling Position
Kneeling — Middle Ground
The intermediate position — kneeling with the rifle rested on the right (or left) knee. Demands specific ankle and hip flexibility. A transition discipline between prone and standing that develops balance and body awareness.
Natural Point of Aim
Body Alignment Technique
The fundamental technique of aligning the body so the rifle naturally points at the target without muscular tension. Correct NPA produces consistent shots and reduces fatigue. The first thing every beginner learns.
Rifle Hold
Grip & Support Technique
How the left hand supports the rifle determines stability. Too tight a grip introduces tremor; too loose allows instability. Learning the correct bone-support hold — not muscle hold — is fundamental to consistent accuracy.
Cheek Weld
Head Position — Consistency
Pressing the cheek consistently against the stock ensures the eye aligns identically with the rear sight on every shot. Inconsistent cheek weld is one of the most common causes of grouping errors in beginners.
Respiratory Pause
Breath Control — Core Skill
Breathing causes the rifle to move. Elite shooters take a partial breath, exhale a portion, then pause breathing for the 7–10 seconds it takes to fire. This respiratory window is when all shots must be taken.
Trigger Squeeze
The Most Important Technique
The trigger must be pressed straight back with the first pad of the index finger — never pulled, jerked or slapped. A smooth, even pressure applied over 3–5 seconds prevents disturbing the aim. The skill that separates amateurs from champions.
Follow Through
Post-Shot Discipline
Maintaining position, sight picture, and pressure after the shot fires. Releasing too early — before the pellet leaves the barrel — disturbs the aim. Follow-through ensures the shot goes exactly where aimed.
Shot Calling
Mental Note of Each Shot
The ability to know exactly where each shot hit before looking at the target — based on where the sight picture was at the moment of discharge. Developing this skill is a mark of an advanced, self-aware shooter.
Heartbeat Management
Cardiovascular Awareness
The heartbeat causes subtle rhythmic movement of the rifle. Advanced shooters learn to time their trigger release to the pause between beats, synchronising the shot with the body’s natural rhythm for maximum precision.
Dry Fire Practice
Training Without Ammunition
Practising the full shooting process without live ammunition. Develops muscle memory for trigger technique, position, and breathing without the cost of rounds. Elite shooters spend as much time dry firing as live shooting.
Sight Alignment
Front Rear Sight Relationship
The correct relationship between the front sight element and the rear sight aperture. Perfect alignment means the front post is centred within the rear ring with equal light on both sides — achieved consistently every shot.
Sight Picture
Sights + Target Alignment
Once sights are aligned, placing the aligned sights correctly on the target. For air rifle, this typically means the front sight ring centred over the bull. The relationship between sights and target determines where the shot lands.
Eye Focus
Front Sight Priority
The eye can only focus sharply at one distance. In rifle shooting, focus must be on the front sight — the target and rear sight will appear slightly blurred. Training the eye to maintain front sight focus is essential and counterintuitive for beginners.
Aperture Sight
Competition Sight System
Competition air rifles use dioptre (aperture) sights — adjustable rings that allow precise windage and elevation changes in fractions of a millimetre. Understanding and adjusting sights is an essential competitive skill.
Group Analysis
Reading Your Shots
Analysing where shots land on a target to diagnose technique errors. Consistent groupings in one direction indicate systematic errors in hold, trigger, or alignment. Learning to read your own groups is a fundamental self-coaching skill.
Zero Setting
Sight Adjustment
Adjusting the sights so the rifle shoots to the point of aim at a specific distance. Every rifle must be zeroed for each individual shooter — accounting for their specific hold, eye, and shooting style. Learning to zero accurately is a basic competition requirement.
Pre-Shot Routine
Consistent Mental Preparation
A fixed sequence of mental and physical steps performed identically before every shot. Having a locked routine eliminates hesitation, reduces anxiety, and ensures every shot begins from the same mental state — consistency is the key to high scores.
Focus & Concentration
Single-Pointed Attention
Rifle shooting demands a level of focused attention rarely required in other sports — blocking out noise, time pressure, other competitors, and internal chatter. Training this ability transfers directly to academic and professional performance.
Pressure Management
Competing Under Stress
Competition introduces nerves that affect breathing, heart rate, muscle tension, and concentration. Learning to manage adrenaline — using it as energy rather than allowing it to cause errors — is a learnable, trained skill.
Visualisation
Mental Shot Practice
Mentally rehearsing the perfect shot sequence — position, breath, sight alignment, trigger release — in vivid detail. Used by Olympic champions worldwide to prepare for competition and reinforce correct technique without physical fatigue.
Resilience
Recovering from Bad Shots
How a shooter responds to a poor shot determines their final score. The ability to forget the last shot, reset mentally, and execute the next shot with full commitment is a trained psychological skill that applies throughout life.
Process Focus
Execute, Don’t Watch
Elite shooters focus entirely on the process — position, breath, sight, trigger — and not on the score. When athletes focus on outcome rather than process, performance degrades. Process focus produces consistent results under pressure.

Laser-Sharp Focus

The concentration demanded in rifle shooting — holding a perfect sight picture through breath, heartbeat, and muscle tremor — trains the attentional control system of the brain far beyond what most activities achieve. Students report dramatically improved ability to focus in school and work.

🧘
Stress & Anxiety Control

The pre-shot breathing routine produces measurable reductions in cortisol and heart rate — equivalent to mindfulness meditation. Students who train regularly report sleeping better, handling exam pressure more calmly, and responding to daily stress with greater composure.

💪
Core Strength & Posture

Holding a 4–5kg rifle perfectly still for hundreds of shots per training session builds exceptional core strength, shoulder endurance, and spinal stability. Students consistently develop better posture within months — a direct counter to desk and screen-related slouching.

⚡
Fine Motor & Reflexes

Trigger discipline — applying smooth, precise pressure at exactly the right moment — trains the finest motor control pathways in the brain. This translates to improved hand steadiness, fine motor skills, and precise physical control in all activities.

🏆
Pressure Performance

Rifle Shooting teaches students to perform at their absolute best under competitive pressure — managing adrenaline, overcoming nerves, and executing complex skills precisely when it matters most. A skill that transforms performance in exams, interviews, and life.

👁️
Visual Acuity & Eye Training

Maintaining precise focus on the front sight while keeping the rear sight and target in peripheral awareness trains the eye’s focusing muscles and develops exceptional depth perception. Many students report measurable improvement in visual awareness.

🎓
Academic Performance

The same neural systems trained by rifle shooting — sustained attention, working memory, executive control, and emotional regulation — are precisely those that determine academic success. Students who shoot regularly consistently outperform peers in academic results.

🛡️
Lifelong Sport

Unlike many physically demanding sports, shooting can be practised and competed competitively well into old age. Olympic shooters in their 40s and 50s regularly medal at world championships. This is a sport you can practise for life.

🌟
Self-Confidence

The progressive improvement in scores, the mastery of complex techniques, and the achievement of competition results builds a deep, evidence-based confidence — not just belief in oneself, but demonstrated proof of capability under pressure.

Why Rifle Shooting is Perfect for You

Whether you’re a student, a parent choosing for your child, a fitness enthusiast, or someone seeking a lifelong competitive sport — here’s why rifle shooting is exceptional.

📚

Students — Focus & Academic Edge

The trained concentration of a shooter directly improves academic performance. Students who practise shooting regularly show measurably better focus in class, improved memory retention, and higher exam scores — the same mental skills apply.

👩

Women & Girls — Equal & Excellent

Shooting is one of the only Olympic sports where women compete on identical terms to men — same equipment, same targets, same scoring. India’s Olympic shooting medals include many women’s events, making this a sport with proven pathways for female athletes.

👶

Children — Safe & Structured

Under expert supervision with compressed air equipment, shooting is safe for children. It teaches discipline, respect for rules, patience, and precision — character traits that parents consistently report transforming behaviour both at the range and at home.

🏢

Professionals — Stress Relief & Focus

For working professionals, the meditative concentration of rifle shooting provides an extraordinary break from the noise of modern work life. The breathing techniques and present-moment focus are natural stress relief tools used daily by practitioners.

🏅

Competitive Athletes — National Path

A structured competition pathway exists from district to state to national level — and ultimately to the Olympic Games. With dedicated training, athletes of any age can begin this journey at Temple of Academy and progress to national-level competition.

🎓

Government Advantage — Sports Quota

As a recognised Olympic sport, Rifle Shooting provides sports quota advantages in government college admissions and employment. Training at Temple of Academy and competing provides official recognition that opens doors in education and career.

The Shooter’s Equipment

Understanding your equipment is the foundation of good shooting. Here’s a guide to the key equipment used in our Rifle Shooting programme.

Primary Weapon
Air Rifle

Compressed air or CO2 powered, firing 4.5mm (.177 calibre) pellets at approximately 170m/s. Competition grade air rifles are precisely engineered instruments weighing 4–5kg, with adjustable stock, trigger, and dioptre sight.

Sight System
Dioptre Sight

The competition rear sight — an aperture ring adjustable in precise increments for windage and elevation. Paired with a front tunnel sight, the dioptre system allows exact targeting at 10 metres with millimetre precision.

Clothing
Shooting Jacket

A specialised padded jacket that limits unnecessary body movement and provides a consistent support surface for the rifle. Regulation jackets have strict padding and thickness rules to ensure fair competition.

Support Equipment
Shooting Glove

The supporting (left) hand glove provides a consistent grip surface and slight padding. Used primarily in standing position to create a stable, uniform hold and reduce the effect of slight hand tremors on the rifle.

Target System
Electronic Target

Modern competition uses electronic scoring targets that instantly display shot location and score to two decimal points. Acoustic sensors detect the pellet impact and calculate exact ring value — results are immediate and precise.

Eye Protection
Shooting Glasses

Specialised glasses with iris-adjustable apertures that help the shooting eye achieve optimal focus on the front sight while controlling depth of field. Also include side blinders to prevent distraction from non-shooting eye and range environment.

Footwear
Shooting Boots

Flat-soled boots with a wide, stable base that distribute weight evenly and prevent rocking or ankle flexion during the shot. Stability from the ground up — the platform from which all good shooting positions begin.

Training Aid
SCATT System

A trace monitoring system that records the movement of the rifle muzzle throughout the shot cycle — showing exactly where the rifle moved during breathing, heartbeat, and trigger release. Used by elite coaches to identify and correct technique errors.

The Five Principles

Every great shooter embodies these five principles — not just on the range, but in every area of life. They are what separate champions from the rest.

“Shooting is a sport where the greatest victories are won not over an opponent, but over oneself.”

Unlike team sports or contact disciplines, rifle shooting places the shooter alone — in competition with no one but their own skill, mental state, and preparation. Learning to win this internal battle is the greatest lesson shooting teaches, and the most valuable one for life beyond the range.

01

Precision

Every movement must be deliberate, controlled, and repeatable. Precision is not a talent — it is a trained habit built through thousands of consistent repetitions.

02

Patience

Waiting for the perfect moment — the right breath cycle, the still heartbeat — teaches a patience that modern life rarely demands but always rewards.

03

Composure

Performing perfectly when stakes are highest. The ability to be still within, regardless of external pressure — this is the most valuable skill shooting develops.

04

Discipline

Doing the right technique every single time — not when you feel like it, but consistently, regardless of fatigue, distraction, or score. Discipline creates champions.

05

Commitment

Committing fully to every shot — with trust in training, acceptance of outcome, and willingness to learn from both success and failure. Commitment is the engine of improvement.
